The Right Flooring Is Only Part of the System

Laminate Accessories: Completing the Flooring System

A successful laminate flooring installation is about more than the planks themselves.

Mouldings, transitions, underlayment, stair components, and moisture-control products can all play an important role in how a finished floor looks, feels, and performs.

The right accessories help complete the installation, create smooth transitions throughout the space, support proper flooring movement, and address considerations such as sound, comfort, and moisture.

Because every project is different, accessory needs depend on the flooring product, room layout, subfloor, and manufacturer installation requirements.

Why Flooring Accessories Matter

Accessories are not just finishing touches. The right components can help:

Complete the Look

Mouldings and transitions create finished edges and smooth connections between rooms and flooring surfaces.

Support Performance

Properly selected components help accommodate the movement a floating laminate floor needs.

Improve Comfort

The right underlayment can contribute to sound reduction, cushioning, and the overall feel of the floor.

Address the Installation Environment

Depending on the flooring product and subfloor, specific underlayment or moisture-control products may be needed.

Plan the Project Up Front

Understanding accessory needs before installation helps create a clearer picture of the complete flooring project.

Tip: Always follow the flooring manufacturer’s installation instructions when selecting accessories for your floor.

Mouldings & Transitions

Finishing the Floor From Room to Room

Mouldings and transitions do more than create a polished appearance. They help finish exposed edges, conceal required expansion space, and create appropriate transitions between different rooms, flooring surfaces, and heights.

The components needed will vary based on the layout of the space and the flooring manufacturer’s installation requirements.

Trim Component Purpose & Application
Quarter Round & Baseboard

Quarter round and baseboard help finish the perimeter of the room by concealing the expansion space between the laminate flooring and the wall.

They create a clean, finished appearance while allowing the flooring system the perimeter space it needs.

T-Moulding

T-moulding is commonly used to create a finished transition between flooring areas of similar height.

Depending on the flooring system and room configuration, transitions may also help accommodate movement between flooring areas.

Reducers

Reducers help create a smoother transition when laminate flooring meets a lower flooring surface.

They provide a finished connection between different flooring heights while helping protect the exposed edge of the laminate.

End Caps

End caps provide a finished termination where laminate meets certain fixed surfaces or installation conditions, such as sliding doors or fireplaces.

Stair Components

Stairs and step-downs require components designed specifically for those applications.

Manufacturer-approved stair nose and coordinating trims can help create a durable, professionally finished transition.

Underlayment

What’s Beneath the Floor Matters, Too

Underlayment sits beneath laminate flooring, so it may never be visible once the installation is complete. But depending on the product and installation, it can play an important role in how the flooring system feels, sounds, and performs.

Choosing the Right Underlayment

There is no single underlayment solution for every laminate installation.

Underlayment may provide:
  • Cushioning and comfort
  • Sound reduction
  • Support for the flooring system
  • Moisture-control benefits
  • Additional thermal benefits depending on the product
The appropriate product depends on factors including:
  • The laminate flooring selected
  • The type of subfloor
  • The installation environment
  • Moisture conditions
  • Acoustic requirements
  • Whether the flooring already includes attached underlayment
  • The flooring manufacturer’s installation requirements

Some laminate products already include attached underlayment. Others require a separate underlayment, and certain installations may require additional moisture-control measures.

Important: Additional underlayment should only be installed beneath attached-pad flooring when specifically permitted by the flooring manufacturer.

Understanding Underlayment Performance

NALFA’s LF-03 standard establishes performance criteria and testing requirements for laminate flooring underlayment.

For Retail Sales Associates

Help Customers Plan the Complete Flooring System

Talking about accessories early in the flooring conversation can help customers better understand the full scope of their project—from transitions and stair components to underlayment and moisture considerations.

NALFA’s Laminate Accessories Toolkit for Retail Sales Associates provides practical guidance, discovery questions, accessory explanations, customer talking points, and selection resources to help RSAs navigate those conversations with confidence.

Think Beyond the Plank

The best laminate flooring experience starts with understanding the complete system.

Before installation, consider where the flooring will be used, what it will transition to, what is beneath it, and whether the project includes stairs, concrete, sound-sensitive areas, or other special conditions.

The right accessories help bring the entire installation together.
