NALFA Advances Industry with Development of Moulding Test Method

WASHINGTON D.C., 2024 — The North America Laminate Flooring Association (NALFA) continues to lead the flooring industry through its efforts in setting high-quality standards. Over the years, NALFA has developed methodologies addressing laminate flooring, sustainability, and underlayment, all of which work to establish distinct criteria for evaluating quality, sustainability, and performance.

Currently, NALFA is reaching another pivotal milestone with the development of a Moulding Test Method, which will cover a wide range of products, spanning from accessory/transition mouldings to tread coverings. The development of the method is a collaborative effort between four leading companies in the flooring industry (Framerica, Mohawk, Versatrim, and Zamma) and North Carolina State’s Hodges Wood Products Laboratory. By pooling their resources, knowledge, and expertise, these entities aim to establish a comprehensive testing standard that ensures the highest level of quality and performance across the spectrum of moulding products used in laminate flooring installation.

Initial testing and research yielded promising results, showcasing the potential for integrating existing NALFA test methods into the evaluation of moulding products. Among the tests conducted are the following:

  1. Thickness Swell
  2. Light Resistance
  3. Cleanability and Stain Resistance
  4. Wear Resistance

Currently, the collaborative effort is delving deeper into refining and optimizing other methods to better accommodate the distinct characteristics and performance demands of moulding products.

Overall, NALFA’s dedication to develop the Moulding Test Method underscores the association’s commitment to raising industry standards and fostering excellence in flooring products.  The method will seamlessly complement existing ones, providing a holistic evaluation of all components involved in laminate flooring installation.
