Product Certification Resources
LF-01 is an ANSI-accredited performance standard for laminate flooring, verifying that products meet strict durability and quality requirements through third-party testing.
To be certified, products must meet minimum thresholds across 14 key categories, including:
-
Static load and moisture resistance
-
Wear, impact, and light resistance
-
Stain resistance, cleanability, and surface bonding
-
Dimensional stability, flatness, and castor chair durability
Products are certified for one of four end-use levels—Residential, Light Commercial, Commercial, or Heavy Commercial—based on performance results.
LF-01 also requires verified compliance with formaldehyde emission limits per CARB Phase 2 and EPA TSCA Title VI.
This certification helps manufacturers demonstrate product reliability and gives buyers confidence in long-term flooring performance.
This NALFA-defined test evaluates how well laminate flooring resists deep, visible scratches caused by everyday wear, such as shoes, pets, or debris. Using a Martindale abrasion device with 80-grit sandpaper, samples undergo 50 cycles of abrasion under controlled conditions. Surfaces are then rated on a 0–3 scale based on visible damage, from no change (0) to severe scratching (3). Testing is repeated for accuracy, ensuring consistent, real-world durability results.
The LF-01 Surface Swell Test evaluates the dimensional stability of laminate flooring joints under prolonged water exposure, simulating real-world moisture conditions. An inverted “T” joint is assembled and exposed to 100 mL of dyed distilled water for 24 hours. Swelling is measured at multiple points using a calibrated micrometer before exposure, after 24 hours (wet swell), and after 48 hours (recovery swell).
Results are assessed both visually (rated 1–5) and quantitatively, with average swell values calculated for consistency. If significant swelling or leakage is observed, the test is repeated to ensure accuracy. Standardized procedures and equipment ensure reliable, reproducible performance evaluations.
LF-02 is an ANSI-accredited sustainability standard for laminate flooring, evaluating products across their full lifecycle—from design and sourcing to use and disposal. Certification is based on meeting prerequisites and earning points in five key areas:
-
Product Design (e.g., life cycle assessments, sustainable materials)
-
Manufacturing (e.g., energy efficiency, waste reduction)
-
Durability & Use (e.g., LF-01 compliance, indoor air quality)
-
Human & Ecosystem Health (e.g., chemical safety, clean water practices)
-
Social Responsibility (e.g., labor practices, community impact)
Products qualify at four levels based on points earned: Bronze (25), Silver (35), Gold (48), and Platinum (65).
LF-02 certification helps manufacturers demonstrate environmental responsibility and meet growing market demand for sustainable building materials.
LF-03 is an ANSI-accredited standard for non-attached laminate flooring underlayment, verifying that products meet defined performance criteria for support, comfort, and indoor environment quality.
To earn certification, underlayments must meet or exceed thresholds in areas such as:
-
Minimum thickness (≥ 1 mm)
-
Compression resistance (≥ 2.5 psi)
-
Impact Insulation Class (IIC) & Sound Transmission Class (STC) ≥ 50
-
Thermal resistance (R-value)
-
Indoor air quality compliance (CA 01350)
-
Water vapor transmission & mold resistance (Tier 2)
All testing is conducted by independent third-party labs using ASTM and CA methods. Certified products must be retested every five years or when significantly modified.
LF-03 certification gives manufacturers a trusted way to demonstrate underlayment quality and helps industry professionals ensure long-lasting flooring system performance.
About NALFA standards
To earn the NALFA Certification Seal, laminate floors undergo extensive performance testing by an independent laboratory. Test results are carefully peer reviewed prior to any product being awarded NALFA certification. Our requirements cover a broad range of performance attributes, including:
